Jbeliat Gr

Period:
Cryogenian

Age Interval:
latest Cryogenian

Province:
Taoudeni Basin

Type Locality and Naming

Taoudeni Basin is a vast intracratonic sedimentary basin spanning parts of Mauritania, Mali, Algeria, Burkina Faso and Guinea This generalized formation is everywhere in the entire Taoudeni Basin (e.g., Adrar, Hodh and Hank sub-basins).

Synonym: Jbeliat Khang Naam Gr, Jbébiat Gr, Jbébiat Khang Naam Gr

The major discontinuities are numbered and reference to global glacial and tectonic events is provided. (From Martin-Monge et al. (2016) as modified after Lahondere et al. (2003, 2005).]

Lithology and Thickness

The Jbeliat Gr (or Jbeliat Khang Naam Gr) is made up of glaciogenic deposits throughout the Taoudeni Basin. It was described in the Hank Sub-basin as green mudstone and diamictite, interbedded with mauve to red, parallel laminated mudstones and grey sandstones (Bradley et al., 2015).

Lithology Pattern:

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformably overlies the Assabet el Hassiane Gr (Aioun Gr) in the Adrar (Hohd) Sub-basin, and Unconformably overlies the Bir Amrane Gr in the Hank Sub-basin.

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by the Teniagouri Gr ( Nioro Gr) in the Adrar (Hohd) sub-basins respectively, and Conformably overlain by the Azlaf Gr in the Hank Sub-basin.

Regional extent

This formation is mainly in the western portion (e.g., Adrar-Hohd sub-basin) of the Taoudeni Basin
